Officers responding to the shooting report on Shelly Drive and Ruby Drive found a man with an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper thigh, Collegeville Borough police said.
The man was conscious and had a belt on his leg as a makeshift tourniquet, but the wound was still bleeding, so an officer replaced it with a real tourniquet, police said.
The victim, who has a valid concealed carry permit, told police that he was carrying his 9mm pistol in his waistband without a holster when he noticed it start to slide down and reached down to adjust it.
That's when he accidentally pulled the trigger and shot himself, police said.
The man, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The incident is still being investigated, and it is unclear whether any charges will be filed.
